Re: GC vs. Coeburn?
I didn't see the game but my honest opinion is this
Gate City is a good team, they're supposed to be a good team, they support their team like a good team, and yes even your refs know it.
Now then, some people may handcheck now and then, but Gate City does it pretty much from moment one. That is their style. It's known to be their style, and it's not called as much. When you have a line full of 7 footers who are known to be able to block shots, they tend to not get called for that many fouls during the blocks, even if they smack the crap out of someone because its what they do. If you have a smaller guy who manages to get in good positions to block shots, he'll get called more, even if they're clean.
Now you say when you go up state that the physical nature is allowed. That's 100% true. No doubt and that is why Gate City does it, well that and they tend to have more athletes who are able to do it than most teams. However, you can't say that they do it normally, so its ok, then call touch fouls on the other end of the floor. I mean I'm sorry to say, it isn't just about Gate City preparing for up the state and if that is why they get away with it, thats not fair to the other teams. I mean how are the other teams supposed to get used to playing that way or playing that style when they do it and get called for it and Gate City doesn't? Goes back to the consistency issue. You're right about something being a foul at 2:03 and not a foul with .37 seconds, thats not good, and not right either, although I can kind of see that, as that is when an official doesn't want to make themselves 'decide the game' and let the players decide it. What I can't see is a touch foul at one end and defense played with hands at the other. This isn't just about Gate City, but it does seem like they have the reputation, so therefore they are able to get by with it more. Reputations do make things be called or not called, if anybody is honest on here, we all know that.

THAT is what a lot of the GC fans lose sight of when they say they get away with it b/c they are physical. Most of the time, if a team tries to get physical with them, foul trouble ensues, and that's yet another advantage to give to GC anyways. If it doesn't get called and someone gets to play that way with GC, it's that the refs were horrible...SURE...
The game Coeburn & GC played last night was called as close to an even playing field as an LPD team has had against GC since they came back to the district. Sure they missed some, but they missed some both ways. Basically what it boils down to is that the comments from Broady & Quincy told me that they got a taste of their own medicine and didn't like it. I feel that Coeburn is the one team that GC doesn't want to have to play against again for the rest of the season...that's for sure.
On a side note, I hope even after the LPD breakup that GC & Coeburn keep each other on their schedules, just for the pure fact that we'll get to see Tihlee Anderson & Andrew Adkins go back and forth...2 of the most talented freshmen to come through in a long time. 3 more years to see them battle would be nice...great matchup.

Re: GC vs. Coeburn?
n/m VT you replied to me and I thought you were saying I was trying to say you all dropped to dominate my bad.
I think you guys are use to getting all the calls and last time it was more balanced..give Coeburn some credit b/c
they deserve it.
I def. agree with the post above Tihlee and Andrew have bright futures ahead.

Re: GC vs. Coeburn?
Last night's game wasn't that dissimilar from the first contest between these two teams. In the first game, the Devils made 25 out of 31 free throws, while in last night's game they converted 13 of 28. Similarly, in the first game, the Knights made 3 of 5, while last night they converted 4 of 8. If both Coeburn and GC had converted the same percentage of free tosses as they had previously, the score would have been 59 to 48 which isn't that much different a result.
Additionally, if you look at the free throw shooting of each team, you could conclude that each team has only themself to blame for last night's result. If Coeburn hits two or three more of their free throws, they would win or at least send the game into OT. If Gate City hits a reasonable percentage of their freebies, they wouldn't have had to rely on a last second shot to win.

Re: GC vs. Coeburn?
I do believe that percentage of freethrows made isn't the point that most are talking about it is the amount of freethrows that GC gets far out shadowing the amount the opponent gets. By something being called a foul on one end of the court and not the other. If you look at it in that perspective GC doesn't win half their games even if they shoot 70% from the line since they won't be taking 30-35 a game and only taking 5-15 like their opponents.

For a professed football guy, TheBeast understood the basketball comparison I was trying to make. Let's say those percentages were flipped. Let's say Coeburn gets 14 of 28 free throws to go down while GC goes 3 of 8. That's an 11 point swing and a 9 point win for Coeburn, if you want to extrapolate #'s as you did. It's all about the attempts. At one point last night, Coeburn had 9 team fouls to GC's 2 in the 2nd half. This was with 6 minutes to go in the 4th quarter. TELL ME there's not a discrepancy there that goes directly to the # of foul shots GC gets to attempt. If you can, with a straight face, say that--then you know less about the game than I thought you did Veritas.

Sure, I'll agree with that. But let me also add to that the free throw attempt discrepancy was plus 20 for GC last night, and the point swing was 9 when you put in the made FT's. So in other words, both teams shot the same percentage basically from the line, but due to GC shooting MORE free throws in the game, they got a 9 point advantage. Coeburn made up 7 of it given the final tally, couldn't over come the last 2 of the deficit built in due to made free throws.

Re: GC vs. Coeburn?
Forgive me gentlemen, but you're missing the point I was trying, very poorly I confess, trying to make. I was in no way suggesting that there wasn't a great disparity in the free throws each team took. I was just saying that the number of free throws were almost identical in both games (31-28) vs. (6-8) and the major difference was that in game 1 GC converted 81% vs. 46% in game 2.
On the subject of free throws, I believe that for Gate City to be successful, it is extremely important that they go to the line more, sometimes a lot more, than their opponent. If you look at the stats this season, lots of teams (for example, Coeburn 2x, Powell Valley) scored more field goals than the Devils. GC, lacking McMurray, are primarily a team whose best offensive players, (Hackney, Kilgore, & Anderson) like to slash to the basket. In doing so, they're apt to pick up more fouls than a team who is essentially a perimeter team. That's one reason why I think teams who play zone against the Devils are more effective than teams who play man.

Re: GC vs. Coeburn?
it's a conspiracy, all the refs in Southwest Virginia hates Coeburn and love the Blue Devils.

Re: GC vs. Coeburn?
its not a conspiracy theory its a statistic.
the first GC-coeburn game's foul disparity was 31-5 foul attempts. thats obviously skewed toward one team, and if you were there then you must admit that it was badly called. this recent game was a decently called game.
